Shadow box and solid privacy fences are the two most popular wood fence styles we build. Both are typically 6 feet tall, and both give you a private backyard. The differences come down to construction, looks from the neighbor’s side, wind and cost.
How They’re Built
- Privacy fence: boards are butted tight on one side of the rails for a solid wall. One side shows a smooth face; the other shows the posts and rails.
- Shadow box fence (also called board-on-board or a good neighbor fence): boards alternate on each side of the rails with a small gap. From straight on, you can’t see through it, but air moves between the boards, and both sides look finished.
See both styles in our project photos.
Shadow Box vs. Privacy Fence, Side by Side
| Privacy fence | Shadow box fence | |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Complete | Near-complete; slight view at sharp angles |
| Looks from the neighbor’s side | Posts and rails show | Same on both sides |
| Wind | Takes the full force | Lets some wind through |
| Material | Less | More boards per foot |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
The “Good Side” Rule
Many local ordinances decide which side of the fence faces out:
- Harper Woods, Macomb Township and Clay Township require the finished side to face neighbors and the street.
- St. Clair Shores requires any “bad side” to face the installer’s own property.
With a privacy fence, that means you look at the rails. With a shadow box fence, both sides are finished, so the rule takes care of itself. See the fence permit guide for each city.
When to Choose a Privacy Fence
- You want total privacy, for example around a hot tub or patio.
- Your yard is sheltered from strong wind.
- Budget matters most.
- The rail side faces only your own yard.
When to Choose a Shadow Box Fence
- The fence faces a street, a sidewalk or a neighbor’s yard.
- You’re on a corner lot, where the street sees the fence.
- Your yard is exposed to wind.
- You and your neighbor are splitting the fence and both want the good side.
One customer had us build a shadow box privacy fence around their entire yard, with a gate across the driveway and another on the lawn, and called themselves “beyond happy.” Read our reviews.
Can a Privacy Fence Go Anywhere?
No. Neither style is allowed in most front yards, and privacy fences aren’t permitted on waterfront and canal lots in St. Clair Shores. Check how tall a fence can be and the waterfront fence guide first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Shadow Box Fence as Private as a Privacy Fence?
Nearly. From straight on, you can’t see through a shadow box fence. At a sharp angle, you may catch glimpses between the boards. For total privacy around a hot tub or patio, a solid privacy fence wins.
Does a Shadow Box Fence Cost More?
Yes. It uses more boards per foot because boards go on both sides of the rails. See what drives fence cost.
Which Style Lasts Longer?
Both use the same lumber, so lifespan depends on post setting and upkeep, not the style. Set the posts deep enough and stain the wood every few years. See why fence posts lean.
Can I Mix the Two Styles?
Yes. A common layout uses shadow box sections where the fence faces a street or neighbor and a solid privacy fence around a patio.
Can’t decide? We’ll price both on the same layout. Get a free wood fence quote or see wood fencing.
